The Secret Doctrine - Helena Blavatsky

The Secret Doctrine
The Synthesis Of Science, Religion And Philosophy

by Helena Blavatsky

The Secret Doctrine is Helena Blavatsky’s masterwork, her magnum opus, on the origin and evolution of the universe and humanity itself.  Blavatsky claimed that its contents had been revealed to her by ‘mahatmas’ who had retained knowledge of humanity’s spiritual history, knowledge that it was now possible, in part, to reveal.

The Secret Doctrine, the Synthesis of Science, Religion and Philosophy was originally published as two volumes.  Helena Blavatsky’s first volume is named Cosmogenesis.  The second volume the Anthropogenesis. It was an influential example of the revival of interest in esoteric and occult ideas in the modern age, in particular because of its claim to reconcile ancient eastern wisdom with modern science.  The Secret Doctrine is arguably the most famous, and perhaps the most influential, occult book ever written.

Challenging, prophetic, and strikingly modern, it directly addresses the perennial questions: continuity of life after death, purpose of existence, good and evil, consciousness and substance, sexuality, karma, evolution, and human and planetary transformation. Based on the ancient Stanzas of Dzyan with corroborating testimony from over 1,200 sources, these volumes unfold the drama of cosmic and human evolution — from the reawakening of the gods after a Night of the Universe to the ultimate reunion of cosmos with its divine source.

Helena Petrovna Blavatsky was an occultist, spirit medium, and author who co-founded the Theosophical Society in 1875. She gained an international following as the leading theoretician of Theosophy, the esoteric movement that the Society promoted. The underlying concept behind Blavatsky’s Theosophy, and her book The Secret Doctrine, was that there was an “ancient wisdom religion” which had once been found across the world, and which was known to various ancient figures, such as the Greek philosopher Plato and the ancient Hindu sages.  The questions that she delves into resound today.
