The Voynich Manuscript
The Voynich Manuscript is a document that is notable for it’s strange text, that to date has not been deciphered. The text is an illustrated codex hand-written in an unknown writing system. Carbon dating of the vellum, on which it is written, places the origin of the Voynich Manuscript to the early 15th century (1404–1438). Some believe that the 240 pages of this strange document may have been written in Northern Italy during the Italian Renaissance.
The Voynich manuscript has become a famous case in the history of cryptography. It has been studied by many professional and amateur cryptographers, including American and British codebreakers from both World War I and World War II. To date, no one has succeeded in deciphering the text, and The mystery of the meaning and origin of the manuscript has excited the popular imagination, making the manuscript the subject of novels and speculation. Theories range from a secret language or code to an old sort of joke or hoax.
